She holds the distinction of being the first-ever female engineer to work at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), which was India’s largest auto manufacturer at that time. Her employment came about after she wrote to the company’s Chairman grousing about their ‘men only’ policy, following which, she was interviewed and hired immediately.

Sudha Murthy became the recipient of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 2023.

Her novel titled Dollar Bahu, which was initially written in Kannada and later translated to English, was adapted into a television series of the same name on Zee TV in 2001. Similarly, her other book Runa (or ‘Debt’) was turned into a Marathi film by Nitish Bhardwaj called Pitruroon (2013).

Sudha Murthy is greatly admired for her philanthropic work through the charitable trust Infosys Foundation, founded in 1996, which provides financial aid in the areas of rural development, education, healthcare, arts and culture, and destitute care, mostly in rural India.

In August 2023, she was included among 18 others as a part of the NCERT’s panel to revise textbooks.
